The Life Of An Art Student...

Project Assignment: Anything your heart desires.
I chose to work with charcoal and water color for this piece.
I was inspired after looking through anti-war protests for the Vietnam War and came across some compelling images of gas masks. Something about the dark mysterious nature of these objects really intrigued me. I incorporated the butterfly wings because butterflies represent the soul and there’s that old saying, “The eyes are the window to the soul.” I was terrified to work with charcoal because I was not very familiar with it before this piece but ended up absolutely loving it in the end. I started out by covering the eyes with blue painters tape to preserve the white and completely blacked out the board with charcoal. I then went in with a kneaded and white eraser and did the detailing in the shadows. I had my final critique today and overall the professor was pretty pleased. I’m thrilled at how this piece turned out!

It is absolutely crazy to look back on these past ten weeks. It feels like just yesterday my parents were dropping me off here in Athens to start my new adventure. Although it’s only been ten short weeks that I’ve resided in Athens, it feels like I’ve been here for an eternity. My mind is just blown at how much change has taken place, mentally and physically. I felt so fortunate coming into this college experiencing knowing exactly what I wanted to do with the rest of my life….Interior Architecture. But after getting more acquainted with college, I was exposed to new things and new ideas. I had always been interested in fashion but had never really considered doing it in addition to Interior Architecture. After exploring my options, I decided to incorporate Retail Merchandising into my Interior Architecture major, a decision that I am beyond excited about. I have found myself being challenged my professors and peers on a daily basis. Most of the challenges by my professors have proposed have been very positive in helping me grow as an artist. As far as my peers, my morals have been challenged. Things I never thought I would encounter because they “only appeared in the movies,” have found their way to me. It’s the things high school warned us all about but no one ever thought they were actually real. But those moral challenges have made me grow into a better, bigger person. They’ve let me discover what I truly want out of this life and given me plenty of examples of what might happen if I were to crack under the peer pressures.  So far college has been nothing short of spectacular. I’ve hit quite a few bumpy roads but those all add up to the success I am experiencing in my academics and personal growth. I always dreamed about what it would be like in college but always told myself I had years to go before I had to worry about any of that. But here I am….at 1:11 am sitting in my twin extra long bed, drowning out the noise of my two other roommates, pondering my very first quarter in this big scary place we call COLLEGE. And I’ve come to the very conclusion that I have done a lot of growing up in these past ten weeks, but there is plenty more room to grow from here and I am welcoming it with open arms.

Project Assignment: Design something visibly showing an applied force.
I designed a “weathered” door. The size of the door is half the size of an exterior door. The title of this piece is Frank Lloyd Wright Meets Snow White. The concept behind this piece is that it’s owner found the door at a flea market and took it home to his shop. He loved the rough worn texture of the door but replaced the stained glass and door handle with a more whimsical look.

Project Assignment: Design something using 50 of one item.
I chose clothespins. They were easy to manipulate by taking them apart and cutting them down. To show different woods and textures, I stained some clothespins and used sand paper to show the texture of the chimney.

The above picture was my inspiration for this piece.
